India’s largest membrane-based water recycling plant in Surat, Gujurat

In February 2014, Hyflux opened India’s largest membrane-based water recycling plant in Surat, Gujarat. This is another prime example of a large municipal project where Hyflux effectively tapped our expertise and technology to help cities, towns and industries in developing stable, sustainable water supplies as well as meet wastewater discharge standards.

Wastewater recycling is a good alternative to seawater desalination for water-stressed areas that do not have access to the sea. Recycled water can be channelled for use in industries, leaving more water available for human consumption.

For this project, Hyflux was commissioned to design, supply, install and test of membrane systems and utilised our proprietary Kristal® ultrafiltration membranes. The plant is capable of harnessing a capacity of fulfilling 40,000 cubic metres per day of industrial-grade water that is critical to the industries located in Surat, one of India’s fastest growing cities. With a current population of 3.2 million[1], Surat’s leading industries are textiles and diamond cutting where water is crucial to their daily industrial processes.
