In 2004, the Economic Development Board (EDB) announced that it will commence a strategic focus on growing the water industry, with the goal of developing Singapore into a Global Hydrohub targeting 3 to 5 percent of the global water industry market worth some S$430 million and another 5 to 10 percent of the global membrane market.
Supported by the Economic Development Board, Hyflux invested in a multimillion-dollar membrane and materials technology R&D Centre. The centre was officially launched in November 2004 by Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Singapore's Minister for the Environment & Water Resources. The largest membrane and materials technology centre in Asia outside Japan, the facility will focus on research applications aimed at spearheading the development of cutting-edge technologies in water and environmental engineering solutions. The research covers:
a) The development of hollow fibre membranes and modules, including flat sheet membranes;
b) The development of various types of novel membranes with different configurations;
c) New applications for membranes used in environmentally-friendly solutions by industries;
d) The development of biodegradable plastics from renewable resources;
e) The application of green plastics in various fields, including medical; and
f) The application of membranes in the sphere of consumer products.
The centre has more than 10 research laboratories, including a knowledge centre, an innovative process development centre, a novel materials and membrane products development centre as well as advanced machining, prototyping, and industrial design functions, to support the Group into a leading fluid management company.
